50th anniversary Celebrations
By E. Samkange, Chairman of 50th Anniversary Committee

This year is the Home's 50th anniversary and there will be big celebrations held on 29 July 2000. The aim of the 50th anniversary is to raise at least 2 million Zimbabwe dollars in order to embark on the following projects that will sustain the home and continue to teach the children life skills and become self-sufficient. Ultimately, our goal is that we'll be able to live independently.

  • To build at least one family house in each district and move from hostel to family based care. The idea of a family house in each district is to encourage a family environment.
  • To revamp the piggery, poultry run, garden, tailoring, workshop and computer training so that they become viable and sustainable to the extent of benefiting Matthew Rusike Children's Home.
  • To promote community based care through the extended family systems.
  • To rebuild or alter the present hostel infrastructure at Matthew Rusike Children's Home to family units in line with the modern approach of residential child care systems.
